Antara Sains dan Agama

Sambil baca-baca diskusi di blog-blog mengenai global warming, kebetulan menemukan orang yang menulis tentang perbedaan antara sains dan religion, terutama dalam kasus global warming

Princeton Physicist William Happer said, “It’s unbelievable, you hear of an event when the weather’s warm and it’s proof of global warming. Then if the weather’s cold, that’s proof of global warming as well.  And that reveals the problem with the theory that man-made greenhouse gases are causing a climate catastrophe. It’s not falsifiable. Serious scientists, when they look at this, say this is an example of a theory that cannot be falsified and a theory that cannot be falsified is not science. It’s religion.” AMEN!

Metode ilmiah dibangun atas dasar keraguan / skeptisme untuk membangun teori-teori ilmiah., sedangkan agama dibangun atas dasar keyakinan. Kedua hal ini tidak dapat disatukan. Kalau disatukan, jadinya nanti adalah The Actual Method seperti komik berikut ini:

Skandal Climategate di University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU)

Sementara di Indonesia sedang sibuk dengan skandal Bank Century, di luar sana sedang ramai dengan skandal Climategate. Pada tanggal 19 November 2009, puluhan email,data, program dari University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) disebar di internet. Belum jelas apakah ada hacker yang masuk ke situ terus mencuri data tersebut, atau justru ada orang dalam yang membocorkan data tersebut ke internet.

Apa isi data yang dihack/dibocorkan tersebut? Berikut ini ringkasannya (saya ambil dari http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/global-warminggate-what-does-it-mean/)

• The emails suggest the authors co-operated covertly to ensure that only papers favorable to CO2-forced AGW were published, and that editors and journals publishing contrary papers were punished. They also attempted to “discipline” scientists and journalists who published skeptical information.
• The emails suggest that the authors manipulated and “massaged” the data to strengthen the case in favor of unprecedented CO2-forced AGW, and to suppress their own data if it called AGW into question.
• The emails suggest that the authors co-operated (perhaps the word is “conspired”) to prevent data from being made available to other researchers through either data archiving requests or through the Freedom of Information Acts of both the U.S. and the UK.

Catatan: AGW =Anthropogenic Global Warming atau ‘pemanasan global akibat manusia’.

Sejauh ini belum ada sanggahan dari University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit tentang keaslian email/data & program tersebut, jadi masih dapat dianggap bahwa data tersebut otentik, bukan hasil pemalsuan.

Dengan adanya skandal ini maka kredibilitas ilmuwan-ilmuwan di CRU jadi meragukan, padahal CRU ini banyak menghasilkan paper-paper di bidang AGW (Anthropogenic Global Warming, pemanasan global akibat manusia).

Moga-moga skandal macam ini tidak terjadi di Indonesia, terutamanya di ITB.

Antara isu global warming & kepentingan politik

Isu global warming sangat menarik untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai tambang duit:

The interests of the environmental movement in acquiring more power, influence, and donations are reasonably clear. So too are the interests of bureaucrats for whom control of CO2 is a dream-come-true. After all, CO2 is a product of breathing itself. Politicians can see the possibility of taxation that will be cheerfully accepted because it is necessary for ‘saving’ the earth. Nations have seen how to exploit this issue in order to gain competitive advantages. 

 But, by now, things have gone much further. The case of ENRON (a now bankrupt Texas energy firm) is illustrative in this respect. Before disintegrating in a pyrotechnic display of unscrupulous manipulation, ENRON had been one of the most intense lobbyists for Kyoto. It had hoped to become a trading firm dealing in carbon emission rights. This was no small hope. These rights are likely to amount to over a trillion dollars, and the commissions will run into many billions. Hedge funds are actively examining the possibilities; so was the late Lehman Brothers. Goldman Sachs has lobbied extensively for the ‘cap and trade’ bill, and is well positioned to make billions.”

Masalah Biofuel

Biofuel sempat diunggulkan sebagai pengganti bahan bakar dari minyak bumi. Namun demikian masih ada beberapa masalah yang perlu dipecahkan tentang biofuel ini, antara lain:

• penggunaan lahan untuk biofuel meningkatkan harga pangan, karena lahan & sumberdaya untuk biofuel bersaing dengan pangan.
• membuat biofuel memerlukan tenaga kerja yang banyak, atau mesin pertanian.
